Does anyone have any golf tips for ball contact with an iron?

October 11th, 2009 | by admin |

I tend to release the club too early to avoid topping the ball, can anyone suggest a good tip to enable a clean strike trapping the ball between clubhead and turf, I am aware of weight shift and hands ahead of the ball but the problem persists.

Play the ball slightly forward of your stance as opposed to mid-stance…

don’t always use a full swing. sometimes you may want to try to use 1 club higher and swing with a 75% swing to maintain control over the ball and that way you won’t worry about reaching the green.

Without really looking at your swing it is hard to tell. But AJ Bonar use to always say to imagine you were driving a nail into the ground. Have someone watch you and see if your posture is right and that you are not moving your head. Some people have a tendency to "bob" their head during the swing.

I don’t recommend that you iron your balls!

Seeing as I cant see your swing, it is hard to say. You may be lifting you head too early or you might be swing from the wrong area and lifting the club as opposed to swinging it back.
Ideally have a good player at you club look at your swing or get a lesson from your pro.

    Good luck and keep practising.

Knees bent, Back straight butt out…looks wierd but helps. Always keep your head down, and make sure your stance is in coordinance with your ball and club selection. The higher the club the further back your ball should be in your stance. (3 closest to the front foot, 7 center between, 9/wedge cosest to back foot) Don’t hit full force until you are confident you will hit the ball right everytime. Keep inside arm straight…KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN, never taking your eye off the ball and make sure you follow through.

Focus your eyes slightly ahead of the ball. If you leave a divot, the divot spot should be AHEAD of where the ball originally lay. By focusing your attention slightly ahead of the ball, you have a much better chance of making solid contact and making sure you are swing through the ball while accelerating

Maintain your stance throughout your swing. Keep the flex in your knees. Take practice swings to see where the club would make contact with the ball and place the ball in that spot.

Stance toward the back foot, and a divot would help the ball flight as well.

Without seeing your swing, the best advice I can give you is to position your hands ahead of the ball at setup, then make a steeper backswing than say, your driver. Also very important is to keep your head LEVEL with the ground throughout the swing. A little side to side sway is ok, but once you start lifting and dipping your head, you’ll have problems chunking and topping the ball.

If your desire is to "trap" the ball, this will produce a low right to left ball flight. I’m experimenting with the "stack and Tilt" stance and incorporating a low trap stinger. I take an athletic posture, alignment at one o’clock , hands slightly forward, head behind the ball and a steeper ascending blow. I’m having good success on medium to tight lies. Im 6′1" 180lbs. and use + 1/2 inch with 2 * upright. Hope it helps

Most people try an help the ball into the air and top it. THe best way to get the ball airbourne is by trying to drive it into the ground.
