Serpentine Belt Replace. What do I need to know?
October 27th, 2009 | by admin |I have a 99 VW Golf GLS, 4 cylinder, 2.0L. I pulled the routing chart off of the internet. What happened was that the belt slipped off of all the components. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how this could have happened? (bad installation, looseness, etc.) Before this happened. When I was driving in the rain, sometimes I heard a really high pitched sound like rubber slipping, and I had a sudden loss of power to the cars wheels, that’s when I first suspected that the cars belt was loose (could that be involved). I was also wondering if anyone had any tips and tricks for me before I install the new belt? Anyway anything will help thanks.
Check the belt tensioner. It is somewhere at the bottom of the engine, in front on the RH, of course. If it is OK , check the crankshaft pulley, it has a rubber core. With a lever or longer screwdriver, push it slightly along it`s axle.If is soft, not quite ridgid, and u see it move, replace.Check all the other pulleys.

Make sure all of the pulleys are in good shape (idler, alternator, power steering, air conditioning, etc). Make sure they are all in alignment. If not, it may indicate that one of those components mounting is loose.
Installing the belt – be sure the flat side of the belt goes against the flat pulleys and the ribbed side of the belt goes against the ribbed pulleys.
You should not have had a sudden loss of power to the car’s wheels – the belt is not in the drive train.

the serpentine belt runs all the stuff like water pump, alternator, power steering and the AC pump. what causes the belt to slip off? well it can be a few things like if 1 of the pulleys arent running straight or the belt is,nt tight enough or the belt is stretched too far.
